Dwarf in the kitchen
Thursday,April 19,2007
Half past eight. He will be back soon.Breakfast is not yet ready.
Yes.ginger,greenchilly,curry leaves...
Ok, now,let me grind the coconut.chutney is ready.
Boiling uppuma in the pan. Now? ah...i have forgot about the pappad.
He needs three pappads for each portion of uppuma. So let me put the small pan on the burner. Kitchen is like a hot pan, though it is still morning.
I have left the door open. Are you afraid? I asked myself. Have the fear that somebody may intrude?
no. This is not a movie scene for such
accidents. This is our home, and it is day time too.
Outside, nature beams after last night's rain.
Nothing to fear.Actually these moments are fit for
any dramatic event, like the one we have seen in
the film DREAMS-the fox-wedding procession!
I heard the sound of little footsteps at the doorstep.
Though i did not turn my eyes,i saw a small figure.
A dwarf.
He was standing there on the threshold of my kitchen all this time.
I did not turn my face.
I thought not to disturb him, to make him feel his entry natural.
He peeped into the kitchen at least twice or thrice.
''I am coming from the fairy land, and do you want me to help you?''
'' Oh! thank! i need no help,'' i said, setting aright
all the plates and pots strewn on the kitchen floor.
I heard his footsteps again, this time very close to me.
''What will you give me,if i turned all this into gold? ' he asked again.
I finished cleaning pots and spoons. I was going to take bath.Today too i will be late in the office.
He seemed lingering around.
'' Do you have any promises to keep?'', he asked me, this time in a tone of secrecy!
A roaring bike entered the courtyard. It was he. Oh! I had left the frying pan on the burner...It is almost burnt! Oh god! He clasped me in his arms and asked. '' What happened to you?'' A flock of memories made me mumble. '' Nothing. But his name is Rumpelstiltskin.I will never forget.''
